You may have seen ceramic portraits on tombstones in local cemeteries. It’s likely those were manufactured by the J.A. Dedouch Co., of Oak Park.
Wilhelmine Coste, who wrote an undergraduate thesis on photoceramic gravestone portraiture and its connection to immigrant communities in the United States, will give a Zoom presentation on these ceramic markers, commonly known as “dedos,” at 3 p.m. CST Jan. 18.
Dedos were the successful product of the J.A. Dedouch Co., of Oak Park. The company started in 1893 and quickly became one of the most popular companies that manufactured ceramic tombstone pictures, eventually known as dedos. Dedouch was sold to PSM, a Canadian company, in 2004. You can read more about the Dedouch Co., in our Spring 2018 newsletter at oprfumuseum.org (under Explore and Research).
You won’t even have to leave the comfort of your home for this presentation. Register for our Zoom program by messaging us through our contact form.
